The 4 stages of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a major cause of chronic pain and lack of mobility.If you have knee pain, the first step is meeting with your doctor to find out whether you actually have OA and, if so, what stage of OA you have.

The Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system is the most widely accepted standard for diagnosing OA by x-ray. The KL stages are shown in the following knee x-rays, with explanations to help you understand what a doctor would see in each image2,3:
